The door check strap is a small but very important component responsible for comfort and safety when using car doors. But over time, even the most reliable mechanisms fail. Based on many years of ANT Manufacturing experience, we have compiled a list of 10 car models whose door check straps most often require repair. These models are true “leaders” in the number of customer requests.
1. Toyota Camry (XV10 - XV40 / V50)
Especially common issues with Camry V30 (2001 – 2006) and V40 (2006 – 2011).
Main problem — wear of plastic retainers and loss of fixation in the middle position.
2. Mazda 6 (GG, GH, GJ)
Mazda 6 models of the first and second generations (2002–2012) often lose rear door fixation. Crunching sounds and cracks in retainers are also typical.
Another problem is that new and used check straps for this model are very expensive.
3. Hyundai Sonata (YF, LF)
Sonata models from 2010 – 2019 are characterized by slipping of the middle position and lack of smooth fixation.
Most often, front door check straps require repair.
4. Skoda Octavia (A5, A7)
Especially popular is the Octavia A5 (2004 – 2013).
Typical problem — wear of internal bushings and polymer rollers, leading to squeaks and lack of clear fixation.
5. Renault Megane (II, III), Laguna, Espace, Scenic
Megane models from 2002 – 2016 often fail due to poor sealing of the mechanism, leading to moisture and rust. Laguna, Espace, Scenic — roller mechanisms are fully open, and original retainers are usually made of plastic and cannot withstand the load.
6. Mitsubishi Lancer (IX, X)
Lancer IX (2003 – 2008) and Lancer X (2007 – 2016) often suffer from retainer failures, especially in the driver’s door.
Complaints usually relate to crunching, sticking, or complete loss of fixation.
7. KIA Ceed (1st and 2nd generations)
Typical problems for Ceed ED and JD — wear of plastic retaining elements and lack of smooth operation.
Most often reported after 100,000 km mileage.
8. Suzuki Grand Vitara (2nd generation)
Grand Vitara 2005 – 2015 often loses intermediate fixation, which is especially inconvenient on slopes or when passengers are boarding.
Adding as an owner of a 2008 Grand Vitara — this is a widespread issue for these cars. Even though the rod has a plastic coating and the retainers are made of plastic, wear is very noticeable (although theoretically the friction coefficient should be the lowest). Probably different types of plastics were used, or it was a design flaw.
9. Subaru Forester (SG, SH)
Forester models from 2002 – 2012 often experience sticking due to roller wear and lack of lubrication.
Loss of intermediate fixation is also typical.
10. Honda CR-V (III, IV generations)
CR-V 2007 – 2016 is a popular SUV, but with limited retainer durability.
Most often, front door check straps require repair.
