Ukraine produces auto parts for brands such as BMW, Porsche, Ferrari and Lamborghini. These parts include wiring, harnesses, complex electronics and body parts. Until February 24, 2022, the factories were operating at full capacity, but the war brought significant changes. Many enterprises have reduced staff due to mobilization and border lockdowns. Supply volumes have declined and some factories have shut down.
Despite the difficulties, before the war, 22 global and regional manufacturers of auto components operated in Ukraine, creating about 60 thousand jobs and attracting investments in the amount of 400-800 million euros. These companies provided workers with decent official salaries.
The bulk of the enterprises are concentrated in Western Ukraine, which is due to their proximity to European markets. Among them:
- Fujikura: produces cable products for Volkswagen Group vehicles, including Porsche and MAN.
- Bader and Aunde: they sew seat covers for Audi, Mercedes, BMW, as well as for Tesla and Maybach.
- VET AUTOMOTIVE: produces seat heating systems, touch sensors and cables for Ferrari, Porsche, BMW, Mercedes and Opel.
- LEONI: produces cable networks for Opel, Porsche, Volkswagen, Audi, Lamborghini and MAN.
- Nexans: produces cable networks for BMW, Opel, Audi, Mercedes and Porsche.
- Kromberg & Schubert: Specializes in on-board cable systems for BMW, Audi and Volkswagen.
- ODW-Elektrik: produces cables, magnetic coils and electromechanical structures for Volkswagen, BMW, Porsche and Volvo.
In the Kiev region there is a plant of the Kostal company, specializing in the production of automotive electronics. The plant produces steering columns, switches and contact systems for Ford, Audi, VW, Renault, Lamborghini, BMW, SEAT and Skoda.
Ukrainian enterprises played an important role in the supply chain for European automakers, especially in segments requiring manual work, such as cable installation and car seat sewing. Now the industry is going through difficult times, but Ukrainian companies continue to strive for recovery and development.
